Allen was born on June 21, 1937, on the home farm in St. Ansgar to Alfred and Amelia (Stelter) Hofland. He had one sister, Elaine. Allen was baptized and confirmed at Six Mile Grove Lutheran Church in Lyle, Minnesota. He attended country school at Union No. 3 and graduated from St. Ansgar High School in 1955. He served on boards for St. Peter Lutheran Church and Cemetery, ASCS Township for over 25 years, as Union Township trustee, and the Toeterville Elevator Board.
In their later years Allen and Marylyn spent many winters in Texas. He enjoyed tinkering in his garage in Texas, and tractor rides with his grandson Elias. He also enjoyed collecting antique tractors. Allen and Marylyn farmed on the home farm for most of their married life. Their three sons, Don, Darrell, and Paul were their shining stars. Allen took great pride in farming the land with his family, along with his son, Don, and daughter-in-law, Diane.
