April Louise Nicol, age 79, passed away on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, due to complications of dementia and a recent illness.
April was born on April 1, 1947, in York, Pennsylvania, to James and Delores Halterman. She was the eldest of four sisters and spent her childhood in Mount Vernon and Osage, where she attended school and was active at the Christian & Missionary Alliance Church.
From an early age, April enjoyed singing, spending time with friends, and collecting a variety of treasures, especially anything green, her favorite color. She found joy in life's simple pleasures and cherished the relationships she built over the years.
Through her involvement in church, April met Max when she was still a young girl. She later married Max on June 8, 1968. They had two children - Valerie and Jon.
During her working years, April enjoyed a variety of fulfilling jobs. Besides her favorite roles of mother and grandmother she loved anything regarding books or children and even had her own Christian Book and gift store uptown!
When a position for library media specialist at Washington School came up, April was a shoe-in. She worked there until her fibromyalgia/chronic fatigue illnesses forced her into disability shortly after her daughter's high school graduation.
April lived a life of faith and loved her family dearly. Though life brought challenges, April did her best to stay happy and keep the Lord at the center of her heart. She hoped others would do the same.
April was preceded in death by her husband, Max, who passed away in 2019, as well as by her parents, James and Delores Halterman.
April is survived by her daughter, Valerie Tichy (Eric); her son, Jon Nicol (Shannon); her sisters, Chris Winters, Bev Butterfield, and Karen Halterman; her 7 grandchildren, and other relatives and friends who will remember her with love.
The family is grateful for the kindness shown to April throughout her life and for the support they received during her final years. They find comfort in knowing she is now at peace and free of her earthly pain.
A celebration of April's life will be held at the Osage Cemetery on Friday, July 31st at 11:00 am, followed by a time of food and fellowship at the Cedar Valley Seminary. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to CUSB 1533 Main St Osage, IA 50461, if desired.
Hoff Celebrations - Champion Chapel of Osage is assisting the family with arrangements.
