Donna Marie Sholly (Gunsallus), age 75, of Osage, Iowa passed away Tuesday, July 14, 2026. Born on July 26, 1950, Donna lived a life centered on family, hard work, friendship and the simple joys that brought people together.
Donna called several Iowa communities home throughout her life, including Bolan, Grafton and Osage. In 1980 she married Michael Sholly and together they shared many years of life and memories before his passing.
Donna dedicated herself to caring for others throughout her working years. She worked at the egg factory south of Osage, was employed at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, MN, and concluded her career as a nurse at Osage Rehabilitation Center in Osage. Her compassion, dedication and caring nature touched the lives of countless patients, coworkers, and friends.
An avid bowler, Donna spent many years competing in league bowling and participated in numerous state and national tournaments. She also crocheting, cross-stitching and reading romance novels. She found great happiness in creating handmade gifts and relaxing with a good book.
More than anything, Donna treasured her family. She loved attending her grandchildren’s activities and events, always cheering them on and taking pride in their accomplishments. Her grandchildren especially cherished visits with Grandma, where homemade pizza and fresh donuts were often on the menu. She loved babysitting and spending time with them, creating memories that will be treasured forever.
Donna loved family gatherings and enjoyed catching up with relatives whenever had the chance. She was a natural storyteller and often shared memories of growing up on the farm, bringing laughter and smiles to those around her.
In her final years, Donna found friendship and companionship at Riceville Family Care and Therapy Center. She truly enjoyed spending time with residents and staff, who became an important part of her extended family. She especially treasured her friendship with her roommate, Judy, whom she spoke of often. One question remains: Who’s going to work hard at keeping Donna’s Christmas cactus alive and blooming now?
Donna is survived by her daughter, Vanessa and son-in-law, Russ Johnson of Riceville; her beloved grandchildren, Loni, Makayla, Diesel and Alexis; her sister, Helen (Jim) Gerk of Osage; brother, David Gunsallus of Osceola and her sister, Kathy (Vern) Fisher of Garner. She also leaves many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends, who will miss her.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Michael Sholly; her parents, William Keith Gunsallus and Mary Ann Gunsallus (DeVriendt); and many cousins and loved ones who went before her.
