Gary Dean Hyland

Gary Dean Hyland, age 82, passed away on Thursday, August 6, 2026, at his home in rural Orchard surrounded by his loved ones.

Gary was born on December 16, 1943, in Osage, the child of Stanley and Elsie (Schallock) Hyland. He attended Orchard grade school and graduated from Osage High School in 1962. He attended Mason City Junior College before enlisting in the Army. He completed basic training at Ft. Lewis, Washington, followed by medical specialized neuropsychiatric training at Ft. Sam Houston, Texas, and William Beaumont Hospital in El Paso, Texas. He was then stationed at Ft. Gordon, Georgia, for two years.

On August 26, 1967, he married Joanne Ehlke at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Osage. Their first two years were spent in Georgia.

After moving back to Iowa, he spent his working life in the auto body repair business until his retirement in 2011. During that time, he mentored Osage High School students through the auto body-work study program. He especially enjoyed restoring classic cars. His hobbies included collecting antique glassware, refinishing furniture and going to auctions.

Survivors include Joanne, his wife of 58 years; son Jason (Tricia) and grandson Cole, of Appling, Georgia; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Bob and Carolyn Reiland of Rochester, Minnesota; as well as numerous cousins.

Preceding him in death were parents, Stanley and Elsie Hyland; brother Gerald; parents-in-law August and Viola (Rachut) Ehlke, and brother-in-law Phil Tommeraas.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, August 15, 2026, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Osage with visitation one hour prior to the service. Inurnment will follow at the Orchard Cemetery.
