Karen Kay Kauffman

Karen Kay (Duckert) Kauffman, age 70, of St. Ansgar, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, November 11, 2025.

Karen was born on October 28, 1955, in Mason City, Iowa, and raised in Emmetsburg, IA, by her foster parents, Ed and Bernadine Bredehoeft. A 1974 graduate of Emmetsburg High School, she later earned a secretarial diploma at Iowa Lakes Community College. 1978 married Jim Kauffman in Emmetsburg, Iowa. From this union, they had two children: Jenn and Rachel. They later divorced.

For the last 20 years, Karen worked at Diamond Jo Casino. She was proud to work there and loved her Diamond Jo family. Known for her heart of gold, she was nicknamed “Karebear.” One of her fondest memories was participating in the Diamond Jo Talent Show, where she loved entertaining and making people laugh.

Karen was fiercely independent throughout her entire life, living it on her own terms. She loved to decorate for every season and holiday. Her most favorite thing to do was bake for her family, friends, and work family, always making sure no one left hungry.

Above all, Karen loved her grandchildren. Becoming a Grammy was the proudest moment in her life; her grandchildren were her everything. She cherished spending time with them, engaging in activities, and attending their sporting events as their loudest fan. She also adored spoiling her grand-dogs with treats.

Karen was a one of a kind lady. She will always be known for her fiery spirit and sense of humor. She will be deeply missed.

Karen is survived by her children, Jenn (John) Huebsch of Mitchell, IA, and Rachel (Drew) Hartson of Hayfield, MN; her grandchildren, Luke, Katelynn, Alivia, and Jaxon; her great-grandchildren, Lincoln and Jameson; and a bonus son, Travis (Ashlen) Kauffman, and their children Kelcin, Haidyn, and Grayson. Karen had three siblings: Jo Duckert, Sharlene Steenblock, and Ronnie (Vicky) Duckert.

To honor Karen, we will be foregoing traditional services and holding a private ceremony with immediate family. A Celebration of Life will be held at The American Legion in Saint Ansgar, IA on Sunday, November 23, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. for anyone who like to attend.
