Mary Alice Counsell

Mary Alice Counsell, age 96, of Osage, Iowa passed away on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, at Faith Lutheran Home in Osage. Mary was born on May 21, 1929, in Stacyville, Iowa. The daughter of Paul and Rosalea (Mullenbach) Pitzen. She was a graduate of Little Cedar High School, class of 1947. Following school Mary married Owen Counsell, on June 22, 1948. Together, they raised five children: Duane, Gary, Barbara, John, and Christina.

Mary devoted many years of her career as the dietary manager at Mitchell County Memorial Hospital. She was a proud member of the St. Peter’s Catholic Church in New Haven, Iowa. For over 50 years, Bud and Mary were active participants in a card club with her neighbors, which included seven other couples. She enjoyed various hobbies, including quilting, crocheting, cooking, baking, working in her flower garden and reading. Mary cherished the time spent playing cards with family.

Mary is survived by her children, Duane Counsell, Gary (Corky) Counsell, Barbara (Grant) Earll, John (Marsha) Counsell, Christina (David) Radechel; 11 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; brothers, Melvin “Bill” (Shirley) Pitzen, Roger (Gin) Pitzen.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Owen “Bud” Counsell; parents, Paul and Rosalea Pitzen; brother and sister-in-law, Marvin (Edna) Pitzen.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in New Haven, Iowa. A visitation will take place one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Osage, Iowa.
