Malson Sony Johnson

October 15, 1956 — September 11, 2023

Malson (Sony) Johnson, age 66, of Stacyville, Iowa, passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her family on Monday, September 11, 2023, after a long battle with cancer. A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, September 15, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville with Father Raymond Burkle officiating. A Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 14, 2023, from 4:00 – 6:00 pm at the church. Malson met the love of her life, Chris Johnson, while he was stationed at Osan Air Force Base in South Korea, December 1977. In February 1978, Chris decided to walk into a jewelry store to get a watchband fixed. That is when he spotted the girl that would change his life. Malson was working as Chris was walking in and asked if she could fix his watchband. She said, “Ok, come back in three days.” Three days later, Chris goes back and says, “Good morning!” even though it was late afternoon. Malson looks up at him and calls him “crazy.” While still at the jewelry store, Chris was finally brave enough and asked her out. Well, she looked at him for a little bit and said, Ok. Their first date was bar hopping and after their fun, they went their separate ways because of the Air Force curfew. The next day he went back to where Malson worked, and she remembered him! She said, “I remember you.” Then their second date happened. After three weeks of just weekend dates, they went to Song Ton Up and got a marriage license and all the signatures to get married. Their love for each other has been going strong for 45 years and will always keep going. Malson and Chris moved to Stacyville, Iowa, and had two beautiful kids, Angela and Richard. During her time with us, she has done so many things and has made such a big impact on so many people. Her love for her very large family was evident. Malson was also a very well-known cook. She could look at a picture and recreate it, but only better. That is how she created her famous egg rolls. She had the passion to cook, and she made anything and everything. She introduced her Korean food to so many people, whether it be someone who was a picky eater, or someone that just loved new food. While residents of Stacyville would take a walk around town, she loved everyone stopping by to admire her love of gardening. She was always willing to share her green thumb with everyone else. Malson’s passion for her love of the family, gardening and cooking will always be remembered and never forgotten. Malson is survived by her husband of 45 years, Chris; her children, Angela of West Des Moines and Richard of New Hampton; her sister and brothers in-law; Steve (Julie) Johnson of Osage, Jim (Teresa) Johnson of Grinnell, Don (Marti) Johnson of Porter, TX, Laura (Jeff) Fjelstul of Pawnee, IL, Bobby (Tracie) Johnson of Altoona and David (Dana) Johnson Higginsville, MO; many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, Kyong-Hong Choe and Pil-Wol-Yi of Korea and her mother and father-in-law, Marvin and Therese Johnson Champion Funeral Home 641-732-3706
