Roger Alan Hanson, age 85, of St. Ansgar, Iowa, passed away on Friday, August 15, 2025, at 8:20 p.m. Roger was born on March 13, 1940, in Mason City, Iowa. The son of Charles and Lovella (Bolsinger) Hanson. On December 2, 1964, Roger was united in marriage to Shirley Rosel at her grandparents’ home in Osage. Together, they welcomed three wonderful children into their family: Kevin, Theresa, and Justine.
Roger devoted his life to farming – dairy, livestock, & crops – working alongside with his brother, Marvin, as a co-owner of M&R Farms. After semi-retiring from dairy and livestock farming in 1995, Roger remained active in crop farming while also working at Carroll George before fully retiring in 2009. He was a lifelong member of the Deer Creek Lutheran Church.
He was an avid sports fan, especially devoted to the Hawkeyes. Though typically a quiet man, everything changed when the game was on – he could be heard either passionately cheering them on or giving them a piece of his mind. He cherished the time spent with his grandchildren, whose laughter brought him joy and filled his days with lasting memories.
Roger and Shirley enjoyed traveling together, visiting places of interest such as Mexico and Branson. They took a special trip to Hawaii to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary, creating memories they would cherish forever.
He especially loved his mornings at CCC, where he would enjoy breakfast, swapping stories, and catching up on gossip with the guys – a tradition he looked forward to. He enjoyed tinkering around the house and farm with small projects or checking off his honey-to-do-list. He often spent quiet hours sitting on the front deck watching his neighbors tend to their fields, a simple pleasure he never got tired of.
Roger is survived by his wife, Shirley; children, Kevin Hanson, Theresa (Dean) Gaines, Justine Hanson (Ron Merten); grandchildren, Dayne Smolik, Cassandra Gaines (Jade Underdahl), Scott (Kaylee) Gaines; great grandchildren, Tyson, Kayn, and Kion; brother, Marvin (Sharon) Hanson; sisters, Marylin Wilder, Ellen Krueger, Sharon (Hillis) Rupe, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Janet Schroeder; mother and father-in-law; two brothers-in-law, and a sister-in-law.
A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 28, 2025, at Deer Creek Lutheran Church, Carpenter, Iowa, with Theresa Turnbull officiating. Visitation will be held at the church one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at the Newburg Cemetery in Carpenter, Iowa.
Memorials may be made to St. Croix Hospice of Charles City, or to a place of your choice in lieu of flowers.
