Susan Marie May

Susan Marie May, age 69, left this world quietly on Monday, September 1, 2025, at the St. Ansgar Good Samaritan Center with family by her side. Susan Marie Piper was born March 14, 1956, the third daughter to Donald and Geraldine Piper, a close family with a shared love of nature. They spent many happy times at their family cabin along the Cedar River. Suzy had a special bond with her two sisters and had many close lifelong friends. Sue was united in marriage to Harry May on August 30, 1975, at Sacred Heart Church in Meyer, Iowa. She and Harry made their home at the May family farm near Meyer. There they raised their four children.

Sue loved country life. She enjoyed her home which carried her creative and whimsical style. A most gentle and loving soul, she had a special love for animals. She welcomed numerous pets into her life over the years. The most unique pet was an orphaned fawn she raised and lovingly named Fern. Once her children were school aged, Sue began working at the Stacyville Community Daycare for 20+ years. She cherished her time there and loved watching all of her “daycare babies” grow up. Sue had the warmest heart for others. Laughter always came easily when she was by your side. Our hearts break to let her go. She is all around us in what she loved and the memories she blessed us with.

Susan is survived by two daughters, Cassie (Troy) Hanna of Rose Creek, MN, and Hillary May of North Liberty, IA; two sons, Gabriel (Amy) May, and Skyler (Emily) May of Stacyville, IA; eight grandchildren, Harrison Hanna, Maverick Hanna, Scarlett Hanna, Hadley May, Brexton May, Brylee May, Maxine May, and Bowen May; sister, Carol Dockum of Rock Falls, IA; in-laws, Jon Barry of Rochester, MN, Janet May of Dubuque, IA, Duane (Helen) May of Stacyville, IA, Audrey (Ralph) Wolf of Mason City, Iowa; maternal aunt, Brenda (Owen) Currier of Mason City, IA, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harry; sister, Chris Piper; and brother-in-law, Gary Dockum.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, September 20, 2025, from 1:30 – 4:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in St. Ansgar, IA. A memorial service will take place at 1:00 p.m. prior to the visitation at the church. A private burial will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Meyer, IA.
