Vera Marie Kasel

Vera Marie Kasel, age 90, passed away on May 30, 2026.

Vera was born on October 27, 1935, in Havelock, Iowa, to her parents and four older brothers on the family farm. In the years that followed, three more brothers joined the family. Growing up, Vera was responsible for helping with the cooking, cleaning, and sewing for her brothers as well as herself. These responsibilities became a common thread throughout her life and were reflected in the many memories she created while caring for and serving others.

On October 13, 1962, Vera married John Kasel. After their marriage, they moved to Osage, where John was employed by the Oliver Company and where they raised their family. Prior to her marriage, Vera taught school in Clear Lake and Marble Rock. After becoming a mother, she worked as a substitute teacher at Sacred Heart School. As her children grew, she volunteered in the school lunchroom, was an active member of the Sacred Heart Guild, served as a Girl Scout leader, and was John's primary assistant with numerous Knights of Columbus activities.

After her children left home, Vera began selling Avon and became an annual member of the President's Club. During retirement, Vera and John remained active at the Osage Senior Center, where Vera often helped prepare meals. She enjoyed playing cards, especially 500—as well as bingo and other activities that allowed her to stay connected with friends and community members. A devoted supporter of the Green Devils, Vera frequently attended high school activities long after her own children had graduated.

Vera is survived by her five children: Theresa Kasel of San Diego, California; Mary Jo Vogl of Urbandale, Iowa; Debra Kasel (Donald Cook) of Osage, Iowa; Kevin Kasel of West Des Moines, Iowa; and Benjamin Kasel (Lori) of Le Mars, Iowa. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Matthew Vogl (Amelia), Brandon Vogl (Courtney), Heather Trennepohl (Chandler), Heidi Cook, Kenna Kasel, and Teagan Kasel; five great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Gail H. Ives, Jr. and Dennis Ives. Additionally, several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her infant son, Timothy; her husband, John; her five brothers, James, Gerald, Orville, John, and Hilary Ives; her son-in-law, John Vogl; and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. Vera will be remembered for her dedication to family, her generous spirit of service, and her unwavering commitment to her community. Her kindness, faith, and willingness to help others touched many lives and leaves a lasting legacy for those who knew and loved her.
